Chinese Auspicious Dates: How the Huangli Chooses Lucky Days

Chinese Auspicious Dates in the Huangli are chosen by stacking four checks on the same civil day: the Yi and Ji activity labels, the Jianchu twelve officers, Huangdao versus Heidao, and clash or sha with the zodiac animals of the people involved. A day can sit on Huangdao and still be forbidden for moving house, moving in, betrothal gifts, or opening a shop. Pick the activity first, open a month collection, then open the day page for hours. The almanac is a traditional calendar reading; a booked civil appointment still takes the slot.

How does the Huangli grade a day?

The Huangli prints a Gregorian date with the lunar date, stem-branch, solar term, and a stack of folk-calendar marks. People looking up Chinese Auspicious Dates often want one green stamp. The marks on that day can agree or pull apart.

  1. Activity labels — Yi (suitable) and Ji (avoid) for named tasks that morning.
  2. Jianchu twelve officers — the day’s shape in a twelve-day cycle.
  3. Huangdao versus Heidao — a coarser yellow-path / black-path filter.
  4. Clash and sha — folk constraints tied to the zodiac animals of the people who must attend.

A Success officer on Huangdao still fails if the Yi row omits your task, if the Ji row names it, or if the day clashes the person who has to be in the room.

Why can a Huangdao day still be forbidden for my task?

Jianchu (建除十二神) walks the lunar month in a fixed cycle: Jian (Establish), Chu (Remove), Man (Full), Ping (Balance), Ding (Steady), Zhi (Hold), Po (Break), Wei (Danger), Cheng (Success), Shou (Gather), Kai (Open), and Bi (Close). Cheng and Kai are the officers families reach for at a wedding or a shop opening. Ding is used when the job is to settle. Po and Bi are used when the job is to end or shut. Man is often treated as already full, so it sits awkwardly with a household move.

OfficerTemperamentWhy it can block a yellow-path day
Cheng / KaiCompletion or openingFavored for starts — still useless if Yi omits your task
DingSettlingFits agreements and moving in; a poor match for demolition
ManAlready fullOften awkward for relocating, even on Huangdao
Po / BiBreaking or shuttingUsed for endings; avoided for new starts

Huangdao can land on a Po or Bi day, or on a Cheng day whose Yi list omits your task. The officer tells you what kind of day it is. The Yi and Ji row tells you whether that kind of day was used for the act you will do. Both lines have to be read.

How do Huangdao and Heidao actually work?

Huangdao (yellow path) and Heidao (black path) are a second filter. Traditional almanacs group certain day-spirits onto the yellow path — among them Qinglong, Mingtang, Jingui, Tiande, Yutang, and Siming — and others onto the black path — among them Tianxing, Zhuque, Baihu, Tianlao, Xuanwu, and Gouchen.

Use Huangdao as a coarse screen when you have many free weekdays. Passing Huangdao does not grant a free pass. A Huangdao day may still print “avoid travel” or “avoid moving in.” Heidao does not close the city office. It marks the day as traditionally poor for ritual-type starts. When the yellow-path mark, the officer, and the activity row disagree, the activity row is the one that names your task.

What do clash and sha mean for the people in the room?

Each civil day carries an earthly branch, and that branch stands opposite one of the twelve zodiac animals. The printed 冲 (clash) names the animal in tension with the day. Folk practice asks the main participants — the couple, the person moving, the shop owner — to check their birth-year animal against that clash. If it matches, families usually pick another date, or they keep the date and shift the ceremonial role.

Sha (煞) is a related folk constraint: a directional or yearly sha printed beside the day. It cautions about facing, timing, or who should stand in the rite. Two households can share a Huangdao Cheng day and still split, because one partner’s animal is the clash animal. Treat clash and sha as a family constraint on top of the public calendar.

Why don’t the Yi labels match English event names?

The almanac names tasks in classical Chinese. A modern English event often has no single printed equivalent. Match the label to the physical act you will do that morning.

Printed labelWhat the act usually isEasy to confuse with
Yi Xi (宜移徙)Relocating the household — the move itself“Moving day” in the logistics sense
Yi Ruzhai (宜入宅)First entry across the thresholdHousewarming or “moving in”
Yi Nacai (宜纳采)Presenting betrothal giftsAn engagement dinner or a ring photoshoot
Yi Kaishe (宜开市)Opening a shop or commencing tradeA grand-opening party or a ribbon cutting

A housewarming weekend may need Yi Ruzhai for the first crossing of the door, and a different Yi day if you also want a banquet. “Engagement” in English can mean a dinner, a ring, or a legal filing; only 纳采 is on the almanac. “Grand opening” may be 开市, 开业, or a photo session with no traditional label. If the label is absent, the day was not graded for that act.

How do I look up a date and the hours?

  1. Pick the activity in almanac terms: Yi Xi, Yi Ruzhai, Yi Nacai, Yi Kaishe, or the closest printed synonym for the act you will do.
  2. Open the month collection for the civil month you can actually use. English guides already on this site include Auspicious Days in September 2026, Auspicious Days in October 2026, and Auspicious Days in November 2026. Those pages group days by printed labels; this article does not reprint their date lists.
  3. Open the day page for hours. Supportive and caution hours live on the individual date, in twelve double-hours. The month collection will not replace that step.

For any other month, or to jump straight to a known date, use the Chinese Calendar. Choose the month, find the day, then read Yi and Ji, the officer, Huangdao or Heidao, the clash animal, and the hour table on that same page. Keep one source for one event.

What if the almanac and a civil appointment disagree?

Registry offices, hospitals, schools, courts, and visa centres run on civil clocks. When the only available slot falls on Heidao, on a clash day, or on a Ji mark for your task, take the slot. If the family still wants a Huangli gesture, move the ritual — the first entry, the betrothal gift, the shop incense — to a later labelled day, and keep the legal act on the booked morning.

The Huangli is a traditional calendar system. It offers a shared language for families planning rites. It does not guarantee wealth, health, a passing exam, or a peaceful move.

Treat Chinese Auspicious Dates as a reading of a printed day: activity first, officer second, yellow path as a filter, clash as a family check, hours last.
