Geng Metal Day Master: Meaning, Strength, and How to Look It Up

A Geng Metal Day Master is the yang Metal Heavenly Stem, written 庚, that sits on the day pillar of a Four Pillars of Destiny (BaZi) chart. It names the stem of the solar calendar day, not a personality type and not a forecast. Strength is not read from the stem alone: the month branch, the season defined by solar terms, and the rest of the four pillars all change how Metal is supported or drained. Look the day stem up first, then place it in seasonal context before you compare it with other stems or Ten Gods.

What Geng Metal names in a Four Pillars chart

The Four Pillars of Destiny, called BaZi (八字, “eight characters”) in Chinese, records year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar joins a Heavenly Stem (天干) to an Earthly Branch (地支). The ten stems cycle through Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, each in a yang form and a yin form. Geng 庚 is the yang Metal stem. Its yin pair is Xin 辛.

The Day Master (日主, also 日元) is only the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar. If that stem is Geng, the chart is filed as a Geng Metal Day Master. Year, month, and hour stems still matter, but they are not the Day Master. The day branch remains a branch, even when classical notes call it a palace.

Treat the label as a filing key. It tells you which stem to track when you map support, output, control, and resource relationships—the Ten Gods (十神). It does not assign a job, a marriage story, or a medical outcome. Two people can share a Geng day stem and still differ in month climate, hidden stems, and hour branch.

How to look up a Geng Day Master from a civil record

Civil calendars and Chinese almanacs do not always share the same boundaries. In BaZi, the month pillar follows solar terms (节气), not the new moon of the lunar month. The hour pillar uses the traditional double-hour (时辰): twelve two-hour blocks. A birth time near a solar-term change, or near a double-hour line, can move the day stem. Guessing from a lunar pocket calendar is a common way to get the wrong Day Master.

Use this order when the question is simply whether the Day Master is Geng:

1. Copy the civil birth date, local clock time, and time zone from the official record. Do not round a time that sits close to a double-hour line.
2. Convert that instant to four pillars with a solar-term-aware tool, not with a lunar-month list.
3. Read the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar. Geng 庚 is yang Metal. Xin 辛 is yin Metal and a different Day Master.
4. Write down the month branch and the solar term that governs that month. Those two items set seasonal context.
5. Add the hour branch only when the birth time is known. A missing hour still leaves a usable three-pillar sketch.
6. Record all four stems, four branches, and any listed hidden stems (藏干) before you name Ten Gods.

Seasonal strength starts with the month branch

The method rule: the Day Master is the day stem, and strength needs the month season plus the whole chart. Metal is associated with autumn in Five-Element teaching. A Geng stem whose month branch sits in autumn is often called in season, because that month climate tends to support Metal. That is a climate note, not a character grade.

Spring months foreground Wood, which can control Metal. Summer months foreground Fire, which can melt Metal. Winter months foreground Water, which Metal produces, so the stem can be drained. Earth-dominant months can feed Metal, depending on whether that Earth is mixed with Wood, Water, or Fire. In this vocabulary, strong and weak mean that the month and surrounding signs support or exhaust this stem. They do not mean that a person is forceful or frail.

Read the month first, then test that impression against the other three pillars. A Geng Day Master in a Fire month is not a weak person. It means the month is not Metal’s default season, so you next ask whether Earth produces Metal, whether other Metal stems appear, and whether Water takes the stem’s output too quickly.

Do not freeze the table as a ranking. Hidden stems and branch combinations can reverse a seasonal first pass. Booking, weather, law, and safety still decide travel, surgery, or contract dates.

How Geng sits next to Xin Metal and Ding Fire

Yang Metal and yin Metal share an element and split a polarity. Classical teaching images Geng as ore, a blade, or unfinished metal, and Xin as jewelry or worked metal. Keep those images as classroom metaphors. They are not psychometric scores, and they do not license a fixed temperament.

The practical comparison is structural. If the day stem is Geng, you track yang Metal as the reference point for Ten Gods. Fire controls Metal in the generating-and-controlling cycle. Ding is yin Fire. Ten Gods are relationship labels, not occupations. Relative to a Geng Day Master, other Metal is peer language; Earth is resource; Water is output; Wood is wealth in the classical mapping; Fire is influence or control. Those labels change as soon as the Day Master changes. They also change when a hidden stem, not the visible stem, is doing the work.

Before you accept a seasonal verdict, walk this second list:

• Confirm that the month pillar was cut by solar terms, not by a lunar new-moon date.
• List visible stems that produce Geng (Earth), drain Geng (Water), control Geng (Fire), or parallel Geng (other Metal).
• Open each branch and note its hidden stems; a quiet month can still hide Fire or Earth.
• Mark combinations or clashes only after the stems and branches are written down, not from memory.
• Leave hour-based Ten Gods blank if the birth time is unknown rather than inventing a double-hour.
• Stop the reading if the question is medical, legal, or financial, and hand that question to the relevant professional.

What a Geng label cannot tell you

A Day Master is a reference stem. It is not a promise of luck, wealth, marriage, or health, and it is not a substitute for a forecast. Almanac language about useful gods or favorable elements is an internal sorting device for the chart. It does not override labor law, visa rules, hospital schedules, or weather warnings.

Shared Geng days are common: a whole civil day carries the same day stem and branch. People born that day can still differ by hour, time zone, and whether the month crossed a solar term. A guaranteed Geng temperament has already left the method.

Use Geng as the stem you measure against. Do not use it as a script for who someone must become.

A reading order you can reuse

Once the four pillars are on the page, follow the BaZi chart reading guide for sequence: identify the Day Master, place the month season, then name the Ten Gods from the actual stems and hidden stems. That order keeps Geng Metal in context instead of turning 庚 into a slogan.

If you only need a lookup, stop after the day stem, month branch, and known-or-missing hour. Keep Geng and Xin in separate files when comparing Metal polarity. Keep Ding Fire in its own file when Fire is the loudest interacting element. A booked theater, court date, or storm warning still decides the day.

The working habit is small. Name Geng 庚 as yang Metal. Look it up from a civil timestamp with solar-term months and double-hours. Judge strength only after the month and the rest of the chart are in view. Leave personality, luck, and predicted outcomes outside the reading.
